Eva Nangolo will not represent Legal Aid clients for now

Minister Yvonne Dausab has withdrawn a legal practioner’s appointment as a lawyer for Legal Aid clients. The Minister of Justice’s appointment comes shortly after lawyer Eva Nangolo drew wide condemnation for her latest post that partly praised the Damara community before sharing stereotypes she has held about the community.

The lawyer praised the Damara community for adopting a traditional dress they had had for more than a century during a ceremony over the last weekend in Windhoek.

However, she proceeded to portray the community as one she has known for violence and crime. She has yet to give a public statement about her remarks.

A previous post of hers portrayed the Damara as beggars while she was replying to Muchali Mulife’s tweet that promoted the concept of a Food Bank.

Meanwhile, Nangolo has consulted renowned lawyer Sisa Namandje and obtained advice that could unravel Minister Dausab’s initial decision.

The advice she has obtained relies on widely accepted principle of fairness saying that she was not afforded a hearing before she was dismissed. The advice is to challenge the minister and say her decision to dismiss her from Legal Aid cases is invalid.

At the same time, the Law Society of Namibia has distanced itself from her remarks and noted that Nangolo is not a lawyer, because she has not been admitted as such in the High Court.
