The maiden Otjiwondo Tournament has left organisers overwhelmed, authorities worried, sub-urban communities not used to hindrances of their way of life slightly irritated and thousands of Ovaherero who converged on the small soccer field at Eros Primary School overjoyed at the opportunity of coming together again.
Their favourite clubs, African Stars, Life Fighters, Tura Magic and Young African FC had not seen any action for a while and Liverpool Okahandja is defunct. The last major event the community has had was the Otjimukandi Festival amid the COVID-19 pandemic, which authorities broke up.
Organisers had planned nine fixtures for Saturday, 19 February 2022 and only one of them did not take place.
Even though many felt that peer groups comprised of more youthful and athletic players will dominate the tournament, which they did; Otjombongarero Ondie Jehi ( 75-77) gave many other teams a bit of home when it beat Otjiuondo tja Ludwig Ndinda (83) by a solitary goal.
The older team, whose members include former Okakarara Councillor Vetaruhe Kandorozu, Otjinene Councillor Erwin Katjizeu and PDM’s Manuel Ngaringombe, adopted a sensible approach.
Launch the least number of attacks and concentrate the most on defence.
The old chaps road their luck and earned a penalty they converted, and spent the rest of the game parking the bus. They will progress to the next stage of the tournament.
Otjomatoorero Aminuis (89) beat Otjotungava’s A (81-82) team by a solitary goal. An interesting game followed when Otjongutukiro (90) beat Otjozombande (93-94) four-goals to nil. Otjozombangane B (95-96) beat Otjomitanda B ( 85) by five-penalties to four. Onjose A (86-87) beat Otjomatoore 4-3 and Onjose C beat Otjakapuuo (78-80) by two-goals to nil.
