Three people died when the car they were travelling in was washed away by a strong wave of water. The incident took place at the Otjivize area near Okanguati, Kunene Region, last night.
The pickup in the picture above had been carrying 12 passengers when the driver attempted to cross Otjivize River at midnight. The strong river current swept the car away and nine of the occupants swam to the river bank. But three other occupants did not make it.
Members of the community, the Namibian Police and soldiers from the Namibian Defence Force retrieved the bodies of the deceased persons. The survivors went through medical observations at Okanguati Clinic.
The names of those who died have not been released yet as the Police are working to informed their families. Namibian Police Head of Operations in Kunene, Deputy Commissioner Jaron Iita has warned people to avoid travelling at night during the rainy season and avoid crossing rivers, especially in the northern parts of the Kunene Region.
