Teacher, historian, and career politician, who placed a premium on acquiring and using knowledge and history has died.

 

His kinship of the Kandirikirira lineage of the Maharero Royal House Traditional Authority’s leaders made him the clan’s leading advocate.

His legacy was marked by an epoch in the opposition politics that spanned decades and ended with his pupil, McHenry Venaani, deposing him from the Democratic Turnhalle Alliance, now Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) and a brief stint as Advisor to two Kunene regional governors.

 He died on 22 January 2022 after a month in hospital that started while he was bound to bury one of his brothers.

Kaura will not only be remembered as a statesman and teacher; he will be remembered as a historian whose renditions of the Otjiherero speaking communities’ early resistance against colonialism, organising of leadership around one leader and the exploits of what are now called leaders of clans to distinguish them from the Ovaherero Paramountcy, will resonate for years.

Tales about Kazombaue, Kambauruma and other legendary fighters of yesteryears coloured his speeches at various commemorative events including the Otjipaue, Ozondje and Okahandja commemorations.

As a politician, he was a formidable foe in defending his ideals and a strong advocate of social change. And he was a witness of Namibia’s historic milestones while in the United States of America and in pre-and-post independence Namibia.
